Polynucleotides

The skin is the largest organ of the body. Protecting us from internal damage, regulating body temperature and warning us of external stresses such as heat or cold.

It’s no wonder therefore, that our skin can succumb to a range of issues, from ageing, dehydration, scarring, inflammation and trauma, to chronic conditions such as Rosacea. The science of skin is something we are passionate about here at Leicester MediSpa and one groundbreaking development in skin restoration is a treatment we are very excited to introduce.

This injectable treatment uses polynucleotides, to heal and restore the skin stimulating natural tissue regeneration. Polynucleotides work at a cellular level to stimulate collagen synthesis, improving skin elasticity and promoting tissue repair. Our fully trained medical practitioners use Plenhyage – Dermafocus and Mastelli polynucleotide products, due to their superlative safety profiles and efficacy.

What are polynucleotides?

Polynucleotides (PN) have been recognised for as long as 35 years as highly effective, supportive therapy for burns/wound healing. They have been scientifically researched for over 40 years and used for their proven regenerative properties in medicine. Polynucleotides are a type of biomolecule and are made up of long-chain nucleotides (the building blocks of DNA and RNA).

They are ethically extracted from trout and salmon DNA, as their DNA structure closely resembles human DNA. The extracted polynucleotides are sterilised and purified before being administered via injection, in to the dermis and can be used in various areas of the face or body.

Polynucleotides help to stimulate fibroblast activity within the skin, by encouraging the metabolic activity of cells, regenerating collagen production and increasing the rate of growth of fibroblasts. They do this by activating and revitalising ageing or damaged cells, deep within the dermis. They also prime dermal fibroblasts to help produce new matrix glycosaminoglycans, as well as creating new collagen and elastin fibres, which deplete rapidly as we age.

The action of regenerating fibroblasts within the skin has extensively been found to improve the overall quality and texture of the skin in the mid-layers, for impressive lengths of time. Salmon and trout DNA also contains Protamine Sulphate – a protein with a high arginine content, which is a substance that offers a highly restorative effect on the skin.

Which skin conditions can polynucleotides treat?

Polynucleotides can be beneficial for those who are experiencing the very first but also more significant signs of ageing as well as skin damage and trauma. They can assist in the recovery of the following skin conditions:

  • Initial and more advanced signs of skin ageing (fine lines, deeper wrinkles, skin laxity and dehydration)
  • Scars (acne scars, trauma or surgical scars)
  • Hair loss and hair thinning (androgenic alopecia)
  • Assisting wound healing after surgical procedures
  • Hyperpigmentation / sun-damage
  • Stretch marks
  • Skin disorders such as Rosacea (polynucleotides have shown anti-inflammatory properties which can help reduce redness, irritation and swelling)
  • Dark circles (polynucleotide treatment can be a good alternative choice to tear trough fillers)

Frequently asked questions

Which face / body areas can be treated with polynucleotides?

  • Full face (including areas which can be awkward to treat, such as around the eyes and mouth)
  • Scalp
  • Neck
  • Décolleté
  • Thighs
  • Stomach
  • Upper arms
  • Hands

How are polynucleotides different to dermal fillers?

Traditional dermal fillers support the skin tissues by means of a viscous gel-like substance. Injectable polynucleotide DNA fractions work on a cellular level within the skin, to initially act as a wound healing agent then utilising their antioxidant properties to boost cell renewal, reduce and ease inflammation, as well as to hydrate and repair the skin.

There is no physical augmentation of the skin tissues with polynucleotides. As a holistic approach to anti-ageing and facial re-sculpting, polynucleotides can be administered in conjunction with other injectable treatments such as dermal fillers and/or Botox®.

Am I suitable for a treatment with polynucleotides?

Before we can advise on whether you will be suitable for a treatment using polynucleotides, we will ask that you attend a no obligation consultation and facial analysis with one of our medical practitioners. You will be able to discuss your individual facial concerns and we can advise on the specific product that would be best suited to your unique requirements. We will also check your medical history in order to make sure that there are no medical contraindications which could prevent or restrict your polynucleotide treatment from going ahead. Once we are satisfied that polynucleotide treatment will be suitable and safe for you to undergo, we will be able to schedule your first treatment.

We do find that polynucleotide treatments are most beneficial to mature skin. As we age, collagen and elastin production declines, which is why we see the common signs of ageing. Polynucleotides help stimulate the production of new collagen and promote cell repair to improve the skin.

Does a treatment using polynucleotides hurt?

Before your medical practitioner administers any injections, a topical anaesthetic cream can be applied if required. Patients have described the sensation of a polynucleotide treatment as like a little bee sting but very tolerable. If you are particularly sensitive, you can discuss pain relief alternatives with your practitioner, in your initial consultation.

How many treatments will I need?

This is dependent on your individual needs and requirements, and where the treatment is to be administered (face and/or body). In most cases, 3 to 4 treatments will most likely be advised, 3 to 4 weeks apart, for optimum results. A maintenance treatment is recommended every 6 – 9 months.

Are there any side-effects with a polynucleotide treatment?

Polynucleotides are extracted from fish and highly bio-compatible for use in human skin and therefore, offer very few immunological side-effects. However, though there is no significant clinical downtime, you should expect some ‘cosmetic’ downtime, such as tenderness, very small bumps at the injection sites and possible pin-prick bruising.

As with any injectable treatment, there is a risk of redness, swelling and bruising which can last for a few days following treatment. You will be provided with specific aftercare advice post treatment.

When will I see the results from my polynucleotides treatment?

You should start to see a change in your skin quality, tone, and texture at around 4 weeks from your initial treatment. Further improvements will be seen after your second and third treatments. Final results are usually seen around 6 weeks after the final treatment, lasting for up to 1 year.

How long will the results from my polynucleotides treatment last?

In general, we advise that results can last around 12 months with top up sessions at around 6 to 9 months following your initial course. However, there are depending factors which can affect the longevity of your results.

  • The area treated
  • How progressed your signs of ageing appear
  • The type of product used
  • Your body’s own rate of metabolising the substance
  • Lifestyle factors (skin care, smoking and sitting in the sun will reduce the longevity of your results)
  • Whether or not, you maintain results with top up sessions every 6 to 9 months

Can I have this treatment if I am allergic to fish?

Yes! Polynucleotides are not made of fish. The DNA is extracted from fish and then undergoes ultra purification and sterilisation. No allergic reactions have been reported in those who have fish allergies.
