Bacne

Bacne (Back Acne)

Back acne, or “bacne,” is an inflammatory condition that occurs when hair follicles on the back become clogged due to excessive oil (sebum) production, dead skin cells, inflammation, and bacterial buildup. The back, being an area with larger sebaceous glands, can be particularly prone to bacne. It commonly appears on the upper back but can also affect the lower back, shoulders, chest, neck, and buttocks. Research suggests that about 50% of people with facial acne also experience body acne. Bacne is especially common in male adolescents, though it can affect individuals of any age or gender. Wearing tight clothing that traps sweat can worsen the condition.

Symptoms of bacne include pimples on the back or shoulders, which may be painful and appear in clusters. These can vary in type, such as whiteheads, blackheads, red bumps, or more severe nodular and cystic acne. The main causes of bacne include hormonal changes during adolescence or pregnancy, friction from clothing, backpacks, or sports gear, medications like corticosteroids, use of pore-clogging body lotions, stress, and a family history of acne. Excess sweat trapped between the skin and clothing can also contribute to clogged pores. To reduce flare-ups, it’s helpful to wear loose, breathable clothing, change into fresh clothes after sweating, and use bags that don’t rub against the back.

Treatment Options

ClearSkin Pro Laser

The ClearSkin Pro, utilises an erbium glass laser, effectively treating acne scarring by delivering precise fractional laser energy to the skin. This energy penetrates the dermis, stimulating collagen and elastin production while creating controlled micro-injuries that promote the skin’s natural healing process. These micro-injuries encourage skin remodelling, which helps to improve the texture of acne scars, including atrophic scars like ice pick, boxcar, and rolling scars. The laser’s ability to target deeper layers of the skin without damaging the surface results in minimal downtime and enhanced skin renewal, leading to a more even complexion.

Medical Skincare

Acne inflammation can disrupt melanocytes, the pigment-producing cells in your skin. When these cells are triggered, they release excess pigment unevenly, leading to dark patches or discoloration known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). At Leicester MediSpa, we specialise in addressing PIH by targeting its root causes: calming inflammation, preventing new pigment production, and promoting the natural shedding of discoloured skin.

Our tailored treatments incorporate evidence-based medical-grade skincare products with clinically proven ingredients like Vitamin A, Vitamin C, hydroquinone, and glycolic acid. These powerful formulations work together to restore your skin’s clarity and improve its overall texture, leaving you with a brighter, more even complexion.

Obagi Blue Peel Radiance

The Obagi Blue Peel Radiance is a medical-grade chemical peel that can effectively treat bacne by exfoliating the skin and decongesting clogged pores. Formulated with a blend of 20% Salicylic Acid, 2% Glycolic Acid, and 2% Lactic Acid, this peel targets acne on the back in multiple ways. Salicylic acid penetrates deep into the pores to dissolve excess oil and impurities, while glycolic acid promotes cell turnover, leaving the skin smoother and more even. Lactic acid provides mild exfoliation and hydration, improving skin tone. This peel helps unclog pores, reduce excess oil, and kill acne-causing bacteria, preventing future breakouts. Additionally, it helps fade dark spots and hyperpigmentation, leaving the back with a clearer, smoother appearance.

Dermalux® Tri-Wave MD

Leicester MediSpa offers the Dermalux Tri-Wave MD, an advanced LED phototherapy solution for treating bacne and enhancing overall skin health. This medically certified LED device utilises three specific wavelengths of light—blue, red, and near-infrared—to penetrate the skin at different depths, addressing both the surface and deeper layers. The blue light targets and destroys acne-causing bacteria, normalising oil production to reduce active bacne and prevent future breakouts. The red light promotes cell renewal and repair, accelerating healing, while the near-infrared light calms inflammation, reduces redness, and stimulates cell regeneration. This non-invasive treatment not only reduces active bacne but also prevents future flare-ups and improves overall skin tone, providing long-term benefits for bacne management.
